I am here to introduce to you Danika Stone, the author of the book Internet Famous. I am so lucky to have her interviewed via this blog tour from the Fantastic Flying Book Club and her book was released on June 6th. It’s such a great honor to have her here.
So without further chit chat, here is Danika Stone!
Danika Stone is an author, artist, and educator who discovered a passion for writing fiction while in the throes of her Masters thesis. A self-declared bibliophile, Danika now writes novels for both teens (All the Feels and Internet Famous) adults (Edge of Wild and Intaglio). When not writing, Danika can be found hiking in the Rockies, planning grand adventures, and spending far too much time online. She lives with her husband, three sons, and a houseful of imaginary characters in a windy corner of Alberta, Canada.
1. First of all, tell us about your upcoming novel, Internet Famous.
Internet Famousis the story of Madi Nakama, a popular teen blogger who sparks up a flirtatious relationship with oneof the readers onher blog. Unfortunately, the relationship ignites the attention of a nasty troll, set on breaking Madi and Laurent apart. Madi hasto uncover WHO is trolling her before he destroys her real life and reputation. The novel isan ode to fandom, to the relationships we built online, andultimately, to saving oneself!
2. What inspired you to write internet themed novels?
I am a real life fangirl and many ofmy closest friends are people I initially met online. I feel like the internet is such a REAL part of teens’ lives, but few books really address it. So for me, it just felt like the right fit for writing YA. Essentially, I write the books I could never find when I was a teen.
3. If you are in a fandom, what would it be and why?
I’m ALWAYS in a fandom. Of course, those fandoms are always changing based on the time of year and what’s onTVandin theatres. Right now, I can feel my Wonder Woman interest building and I haven’t even seen the movie yet! I’m also obsessing over Game of Thrones, one of my long-time fandoms. I adore Jaime / Brienne! The 100 rounds out my top three. I love it even though it breaks my heart on a semi-regular basis. *coughs* Clexa. *coughs*
4. Pick one song that best describe Internet Famous.
“Here”, by Alessia Cara is one of my favorite songs and it really fits for Internet Famous’s plot. As much as Madi is an amazing communicator online, she really struggles to fit in when she meets the MadLibbers in person. I feel like “Here”captures that feeling of wanting to connect, but finding it easier when you’re just in a small, intimate group. Also – let’s just say it–“Here”is just a catchy song!
5. If Internet Famous is a social media, what would it be and why?
Internet Famous would definitely be Tumblr –as all those embedded posts throughout the story show! I love how much dialogue is hidden in the tags and how the platform can really capture in its image and text format. *happy sigh* Tumblr is the BEST!
6. As an author, what advice can you give to those who are aspiring to be like you.
Don’t be like me. Be like you. Because your own voice is the one that the world needs to hear.
Thank you so much for having me on your blog, Bea! These questions were great!
High school senior and internet sensation Madison Nakama seems to have it all: a happy family, good grades, and a massive online following for her pop-culture blog. But when her mother suddenly abandons the family, Madi finds herself struggling to keep up with all of her commitments.
Fandom to the rescue! As her online fans band together to help, an online/offline flirtation sparks with Laurent, a French exchange student. Their internet romance—played out in the comments section of her MadLibs blog—attracts the attention of an internet troll who threatens the separation of Madi’s real and online personas. With her carefully constructed life unraveling, Madi must uncover the hacker’s identity before he can do any more damage, or risk losing the people she loves the most… Laurent included.
