book review 1

Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes never had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, FIRSTS is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.

book review 1

I have received an advance readers copy of this novel from Netgalley for an honest review.

For Mercedes Ayres, the secret of helping the virgins of Milton High in her bedroom is one thing she does for a cause. Well, that is, for them to give their girlfriends an unforgettable first.

But what if one day, the guy, she least expected to seek her services from, suddenly appears in front of her, threatening her to reveal the secret she has carefully protected, that is, if she doesn’t give him what he wants?

Book Review

  • I like the way it is written. It is witty and sensible. Despite the explicit theme of the book, the readers wouldn’t feel disgusted even after reading the whole thing. One of the reasons why I really enjoyed reading it.

  • The whole concept of the book is unique. It is not just a story about high school students having one night stands or families being messed up but, it is also about how these students deal with the consequences of the situations they are in.

Book Review

  • If you disliked Fifty Shades of Grey, this is not the book for you. To be honest with everyone, by the time I’ve read the first chapter, Fifty Shades of Grey is the first thing that came into my mind. By omitting the BDSM concept of the latter and it’s super detailed love scenes, this book leads us head on to the topic of pre marital sex in teenagers. Which is an alarming topic for such age group.

Book Review

There is nothing to comment about this book except for the fact that it is Fifty Shades of Grey meeting the young adult genre. It is is quite amazing how the author managed to combine these two contradicting topics into one single book without degrading the other.

Sometimes I think “Confessions of a Teenage Sex Addict” is a more appropriate title than “Firsts”. Though it is not directly stated in the book, Mercedes has guys in her room like every single day. Who in the right mind would not think of her as an addict? Well, I guess she has her own purpose. (Smiles)

I would love to recommend Firsts to everyone who wanted to read a young adult novel taken to the next level. It is unique, witty and sensible. An enjoyable read indeed.

Till my next book review. (Waves)
